From the 1530s, the indigenous inhabitants of South America were subjugated by European invadors, first from Spain, later from Portugal, who divided it into colonies. In the course of the 19th century, these colonies won their independence. Nowadays, South America consists of the following twelve countries.

This continent has the Amazon River and rainforest, the Andes Mountains, and some of the most spectacular scenery in the world. The highest point is Cerro Aconcaqua in the Andes Mountains in Argentina. 22,833 ft (6,959m). The lowest point is the Peninsula Valdes on the Argentina coastline 151 ft (40m) below sea level.
