OTHER HEALTH INFORMATION: Malaria is a serious and sometimes fatal disease. P. falciparum malaria, the serious and sometimes fatal strain found in Congo-Brazzaville, is resistant to the anti-malarial drug chloroquine. Because travelers to Congo are at high risk for contracting malaria, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) advises that travelers should take one of the following antimalarial drugs: mefloquine (Lariam - tm), doxycycline, or atovaquone/proguanil (Malarone -tm), as well as other protective measures to prevent insect bites, such as the use of insect repellent. Travelers are advised to bring an antimalarial drug with them, since these drugs are not always available locally. The CDC has determined that a traveler who is on an appropriate antimalarial drug has a greatly reduced chance of contracting the disease. Travelers who become ill with a fever or flu-like illness while traveling in a malaria-risk area and up to one year after returning home should seek prompt medical attention and tell the physician their travel history and what antimalarials they have been taking. In February 2003, the Department of State issued a Public Announcement stating that there had been a number of deaths in the remote border area between northeastern Gabon and Congo-Brazzaville due to an outbreak of Ebola hemorrahagic fever. This was the third such outbreak since December 2001. Travelers should take preventive measures to avoid contact with Ebola patients. No vaccine or antiviral medication is available for treatment of Ebola hemorrhagic fever.
