Traffic Safety and Road Conditions

TRAFFIC SAFETY AND ROAD CONDITIONS: While in a foreign country, U.S. citizens may encounter road conditions that differ significantly from those in the United States. The information below concerning Tajikistan is provided for general reference only, and it may not be totally accurate in a particular location or circumstance.

Road travel outside of Dushanbe can be made difficult by checkpoints where police or soldiers are armed. They have been known to shoot if vehicles do not stop upon request. There are also checkpoints on the road east of Dushanbe, operated by independent armed groups. These independent groups have targeted foreigners in the past. For this reason, road travel to the east is strongly discouraged. Vehicles with Tajik license plates have frequently been refused permission to enter Uzbekistan. A change of vehicles at the Uzbek border may be required. Road travel should be undertaken only in daylight hours and on routes known to the traveler or a reliable escort.
