Toulon is a pretty and calm place to visit, but it also has a lot to offer in the town as well as the surrounding areas, which are easily accessed by car. You can find cheap car rentals at Toulon Rail Station, which will help you to make the most of your visit, as much of the South-Western coast of France can be explored using Toulon as your base.

Using a rental car, you can explore the town, get your bearings and find the restaurants and eateries used by the local people (always the best ones). Toulon boasts the largest harbour in Europe, used largely for naval purposes, which is close to the arsenal. This area sums up the town’s history, which is and has been known for centuries as a naval area.

At one far edge of the harbour is the neighbourhood of Le Moullion, a little seaside area, pleasant and friendly; a nice place to get away from the main town. There is also the Upper Town to be seen, with its architecture very similar to that that can be seen in central Paris.

Using cheap car hire from Toulon Rail Station, the surrounding area can be explored. Visit the outlying villages to admire their quaintness and take a refreshment in one of the cafés, or take an afternoon drive to discover new places for yourself, or simply just to enjoy the scenery.

A site that is not to be missed, is Mount Faron. It towers over Toulon, and a trip to the summit in one of the cable cars reveals awe inspiring views of Toulon, the coast and the surrounding area. Also at the summit is a small museum commemorating the allied landings in August 1944.
